Frequently Asked Questions
Competitive Edge Physical Therapy

At Competitive Edge Physical Therapy, we combine advanced biomechanics, cutting-edge technology, and one-on-one care to help runners, athletes, and active adults move, perform, and live without limits. With clinics in San Jose, Santa Clara, and Pleasanton, we’re proud to serve the South Bay, Peninsula, and Tri-Valley communities.

Below are answers to common questions about our approach, technology, and how we help you move better, recover faster, and perform for life.

About Competitive Edge PT

Most physical therapy clinics treat pain at the surface. At Competitive Edge PT, we go deeper by measuring how you move. Using 3D motion analysis, dual force plates, and EMG sensors, we quantify the way your body absorbs and produces force. That data allows us to pinpoint the root cause of pain or performance loss, not just manage symptoms.

Our approach blends rehabilitation, sports science, and biomechanics so you can train smarter, move efficiently, and perform confidently—whether you’re recovering in San Jose, rehabbing in Santa Clara, or optimizing performance in Pleasanton.

We use research-grade technology previously reserved for biomechanics labs to measure your movement with precision. Our combination of 3D motion capture, force plates, EMG, and AI motion software ensures your recovery is guided by objective data, not guesswork.

Biomechanics & Technology

Biomechanics is the science of how the body moves—how muscles, joints, and forces interact to create motion. At Competitive Edge PT, we use biomechanics to move beyond “what hurts” and discover “why it hurts.” By analyzing your movement in detail, we can identify inefficiencies, asymmetries, or compensations that lead to injury or limit performance.

This allows us to design a precise, data-driven treatment plan that restores balance, power, and control for clients across the Bay Area.

Our clinics in San Jose, Santa Clara, and Pleasanton integrate technology once reserved for research labs:

  • 3D Motion Capture to track joint angles and timing with precision.
  • Dual Force Plates to measure power, balance, and landing forces.
  • Electromyography (EMG) to see how muscles activate in real time.
  • High-Speed Cameras and AI motion software to capture mechanics invisible to the naked eye.

This technology transforms your rehab into measurable progress you can see and feel

A 3D running gait analysis captures your stride in real time using high-speed cameras, sensors, and force plates. This allows our team to measure ground contact time, symmetry, stride length, and loading forces. We interpret that data to create a personalized plan to help you move more efficiently, prevent injury, and optimize performance.

Yes. Gait analysis reveals compensations and asymmetries that lead to overuse injuries. By addressing these before symptoms appear, we help runners and active adults reduce injury risk and build long-term movement efficiency.

A full running gait analysis typically takes 2 hours, including testing and review. You’ll receive an immediate breakdown of results from your therapist along with specific corrective strategies.  This includes a voiced-over video of your analysis, therapist recommendations, and concrete movement diagnosis, clear treatment program, and specific individualized results so you can have the piece of mind knowing you are addressing your specific issue head on.

No. Many clients use gait analysis proactively to improve running form, reduce inefficiencies, and enhance performance. Whether you’re returning from injury or training for longevity, it provides valuable movement insight.

Our San Jose, Santa Clara, and Pleasanton labs feature 3D motion capture, pressure treadmill, and EMG sensors to measure how each muscle and joint contributes to your stride. This technology provides a complete view of movement quality that traditional PT simply can’t match.

We currently have three state-of-the-art biomechanics clinics:

  • San Jose – Home of our original biomechanics and running lab in the South Bay.
  • Santa Clara – Convenient for athletes and professionals throughout the Peninsula and the Santa Clara, Milpitas, Sunnyvale areas.
  • Pleasanton – Our newest clinic serving the Tri-Valley and East Bay communities, including Dublin and Livermore.

Each location uses identical technology and treatment systems, ensuring consistent, high-level care wherever you go.

Physical Therapy & Performance Programs

We specialize in helping active adults and athletes recover from and prevent:

  • Running injuries (shin splints, plantar fasciitis, IT band pain)
  • Knee, hip, and back pain
  • ACL and post-surgical rehab
  • Shoulder and upper extremity injuries
  • Chronic movement inefficiencies
  • Strength, balance, and power deficits

Whether you’re training in Santa Clara, rehabbing in San Jose, or rebuilding performance in Pleasanton, we’ll meet you where you are.

Each session is 60 minutes one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. You’ll begin with a detailed movement analysis, then combine manual therapy, corrective exercises, and data-driven retraining. Every visit builds measurable progress tracked from your initial testing—so your results are as clear as your goals.

Every client follows our proprietary Rewire, Rebuild, Perform system—a data-driven process that moves you from pain and limitation to peak performance.

Rewire — Restore control and connection

Reconnect your brain and body to the way you were designed to move. Using Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS), breathing mechanics, and EMG feedback, we reset faulty movement habits and rebuild postural control.

Rebuild — Develop strength and resilience

Once control is restored, we layer in progressive strength, endurance, and power using real-time feedback from force plates, EMG, and 3D motion analysis.

Perform — Optimize for speed, power, and longevity

Train like an athlete with performance testing, movement efficiency metrics, and sport-specific programming. From ACL rehab to running analysis, this phase keeps you performing for life.

We work with active adults of all ages—from youth to masters-level athletes. Many of our clients are runners in their 50s, 60s, and beyond who train to stay strong, healthy, and confident for life.

Shockwave & Regenerative Therapy

Focused shockwave penetrates deeper tissue layers to treat chronic tendon injuries, while radial shockwave disperses energy over a wider area for general muscle and tissue healing. At our Santa Clara clinic we combine both to treat pain at multiple levels.  We also add advanced EMTT therapy to further improve tissue quality, restore optimal function, and get you feeling better faster.

Most clients notice pain relief and improved function within 6 sessions, though chronic cases may take longer. The regenerative effects continue to build as tissues repair.  Many clients continue to use regenerative therapy to reduce pain, improve mobility, and speed recovery.

Yes. Shockwave therapy is FDA-cleared, noninvasive, and proven effective for tendon and soft tissue injuries. It helps stimulate blood flow, reduce inflammation, and accelerate healing without medication or surgery.

Absolutely. We often combine shockwave or EMTT with manual therapy, targeted exercise, or biomechanical retraining for faster, more lasting results.

Shockwave and EMTT are highly effective for:

  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Patellar and quadriceps tendon pain
  • Shoulder or rotator cuff injuries
  • Hamstring strains

Chronic muscle tightness or scar tissue

ACL Rehabilitation & Return to Sport

Most clients begin structured running between 3–6 months post-surgery, depending on healing and strength metrics. Our team uses objective data to determine readiness safely.  We have a specific “return to running” program that combines technology, data, and milestones so you can run with the piece of mind knowing your knee is ready and safe.

Our Return-to-Sport Testing uses force plates, 3D motion analysis, and strength testing to evaluate symmetry, landing control, and power. You’ll receive measurable results before progressing to higher-level sport activity.  This is the most advanced ACL testing in the Bay Area.

We combine biomechanics, strength science, and objective metrics rather than relying solely on time-based progressions. You’ll know exactly when you’re ready to return—not guess.  You’ll even get a specific “return to sport” score that lets you know your injury risk.

Yes. We collaborate with local orthopedic surgeons throughout your rehab process to ensure clear communication, optimal healing, and safe return-to-play progression.

We use data from force plates, jump testing, and movement asymmetry to assess readiness. Once your movement efficiency and strength symmetry meet benchmarks, we transition you to performance training.
